Recent research has dispelled common myths about plants, revealing their intelligence and sensitivity

The concept of plant intelligence has been explored by poets and naturalists for centuries. This idea has been further developed by scientists such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Charles Darwin, who have made significant contributions to our understanding of plant consciousness.
The Intelligence of Plants
In recent years, biologists, chemists, and experts from other disciplines have used technology to conduct experiments that reveal the spectrum of plant consciousness. These experiments have shown that plants are capable of sense perception, communication, and even personality. Research scientist Cleve Backster has suggested that plant sentience operates at multiple levels, including cellular, molecular, atomic, and possibly even subatomic levels.
Plant Movement and Communication
Plants have been found to move at certain times of the day, turning towards the sun and curling around stationary objects. They are also able to transmit messages through their bodies and to neighboring plants, including those of different species. This communication can involve the sharing of nutrients and warnings about potential threats. For example, when an insect begins to eat a plant's leaf, the plant can warn its neighboring plants, which will then secrete chemicals to make their taste less appetizing.
The Emotional Lives of Plants
Research has also shown that plants are capable of experiencing emotions such as stress, anxiety, and fear. They can detect and respond to positive and negative thoughts and attitudes, and can even become lonely when separated from other plants. Experiments have used polygraphs, cardiographs, and encephalographs to measure plant emotions, and have found that plants can react to the emotions and experiences of those around them. For example, when Cleve Backster cut his finger and dabbed it with iodine, the plant being monitored on the polygraph immediately reacted, apparently in response to the death of some cells in Backster's finger.
The idea that plants are primitive and insensitive has been refuted by these findings, which suggest that plants are complex and dynamic organisms with their own unique forms of consciousness and communication. As Lucinda M. Vardey notes, "some sort of cellular consciousness must be common to all life", and this idea has significant implications for our understanding of the natural world and our place within it.
Indigenous cultures, such as the Malaysian tribe called Chewong, have long recognized the complexity and consciousness of plant life. They do not distinguish between human and nonhuman consciousness, and believe that all living beings have their own unique perception of reality. This perspective is reflected in the work of authors such as Peter Knudtson and David Suzuki, who have written about the importance of recognizing and respecting the consciousness of all living beings.
