Publishers Weekly highlights 14 new independently published picture books, sharing author statements on themes of play...

The selection is organized into three thematic categories: playful stories, growth and mental wellness, and nature, science, and learning.

Playful Stories

Six new books focus on fun, friendship, and lighthearted adventures. Jolene's Cow Takes a Bow was inspired by the simple beauty of farm life. The author aimed to create a gentle, rhyming story supporting early literacy.

No Tail, No Problem celebrates inclusivity and friendship through a dog named Jazzy. The story is accompanied by real-life photographs of the dogs at the park. Papa Boar Snored was conceived because the author wanted characters less familiar than typical bears and wished to play with language using repetition and alliteration.

What a Silly, Silly Cat! Draws inspiration from the author's own mischievous pet. The book captures the spirit of feline chaos. Full Moon Speaks began as a painting featuring toy animals and a moon. The author crafted a narrative reflecting animal symbolism, describing it as a love letter to the reader.

Growth and Mental Wellness

This category includes six titles addressing emotional resilience, change, and self-acceptance. Brave Buddy's Big Mission was inspired by the author's childhood memory of awaiting surgery and her later experience shadowing a therapy dog named Dilly at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

How to Be Best in Class is based on the author's Australian shepherd, Phebe, whose behavior mirrored the author's own experiences as an adult with ADHD. Luna in Laguna aims to offer a gentle introduction to mindfulness through a character's journey along the coast.

Milly & Oli: The Great Big Move was inspired by the author's move with her cat from Singapore to San Francisco. The story shows curiosity overcoming worry. When My Heart Feels Tight, New York Hugs Me Tighter explores the feeling of being somewhere new, through the eyes of a child named Sofia.

The Wildflower Children was written by a therapist wishing to remind children they are growing exactly as they should. The author reflected on the question of what she wished every child knew.

Nature, Science, and Learning

Two books in the spotlight focus on the natural world. Can a Rock Grow? Was inspired by a rockhound neighbor from the author's childhood who introduced her to obsidian and thunder eggs. The book explores how rocks change over time.

The Frog Song came to life when the author learned all frog species have a unique sound. The story involves Bullfrog traveling the seven continents on a magic lily pad. Illustrator Brittni Hribar brought the characters to life.
