India's book publishing market is projected to grow to $21 billion by the 2030-31 financial year. The forecast comes from the newly released India Book Market Report 2026-30, compiled by NielsenIQ BookData and the Federation of Indian Publishers. The report, published on September 3, provides a comprehensive analysis of the world's third-largest publishing market, following the United States and China.

The study aims to map the scale and evolution of the sector. Vikrant Mathur, Executive Director at NielsenIQ BookData, India & GCC, stated the report combines market data with industry expertise to offer practical insights into trends and challenges. The analysis covers print, digital, and scholarly publishing, while also examining the impact of AI and copyright frameworks.

Current Market Size and Employment

The report provides a breakdown of the current market value across different publishing formats. It also estimates the number of people employed in the industry as of 2025.

SegmentEstimated Value
Print Book Market$10.1 billion
Digital Marketplace$700 million
Scholarly Journals Market$500 million

Employment in printing and book publishing was estimated at approximately 375,534 people in 2025. The report positions education as the foundational sector but notes significant broadening is occurring.

Key Growth Sectors Identified

While educational publishing remains the core, the report highlights several areas experiencing notable growth. These include trade books, children's content, and professional learning. Expansion is also strong in Indian-language publishing, research output, and materials for lifelong learning.

The executive summary emphasizes that the central narrative is not a simple replacement of print by digital formats. Instead, it describes the development of a more connected knowledge ecosystem. In this system, print, digital, audio, accessible content, and translation are seen working together to improve discovery and the overall reader experience.

Technological Impact and International Potential

The report addresses the role of artificial intelligence, noting its potential to improve speed and reach. It cautions, however, that quality, creator rights, and privacy must be safeguarded. "Accuracy and human judgement must remain central," the summary advises.

On the global stage, the analysis suggests India has substantial potential to expand its international presence. This expansion could be driven by advancements in intellectual property management, translation, publishing technology, and rights partnerships. The manufacturing capability of the Indian printing sector is also cited as a strength for export growth.

Pranav Gupta, Vice President of the Federation of Indian Publishers, stated that publishing is fundamental to India's intellectual, educational, and cultural progress. He expressed hope that the report would encourage more evidence-led discussions and meaningful action across the sector. The previous edition of the market report was published in 2022.
